Taiwan and the Chinese mainland have signed a direct currency clearing memorandum, under which Taiwan banks can start yuan transactions via correspondent banks as long as the island's local authorities approve. Ten Taiwan banks, including Bank of Taiwan, Taiwan Cooperative Bank, and Chinatrust Commercial Bank, have been allowed to establish branches on the Chinese mainland.
