The Chinese mainland businesses are reaching across the Taiwan Straits, having pumped $722 million to the island by September 2012 since the island opened to mainland investments on June 30, 2009. Mainland financial institutions, among others, are expected to accelerate their expansion into the lucrative island market. The Bank of China, the third-largest bank on the mainland, has set up its Taipei branch which mainly focuses on bank deposits, loans, bill financing, commercial acceptance bills, credit letter issuing and bond investment, as well as corporate bond guarantees and issuance.
